Vaxicheck app: list of recorded vaccinations with date, vaccine and diseases

Developed in Cologne by MEDEPS, a spin-off of the University of Cologne.

Vaxicheck is built by a team in Cologne that wants to make vaccination protection easy to understand and check. It is based on current official vaccination recommendations – starting with those of the German STIKO, with further recommendations, for example from other countries, being added step by step.

How it works

Your vaccination check in three steps

  1. Photograph your record

Take a photo of each page of your vaccination booklet. Text recognition reads the vaccine name, date and disease automatically.

  2. Check the entries

Review the recognised vaccinations and correct or add to them if needed – for example for older, illegible entries.

  3. See your result

Select indications and travel destinations if needed. Vaxicheck compares your vaccinations with current recommendations and shows what is missing and when the next booster is due.

Features

What Vaxicheck takes care of

Most people cannot say off-hand when they last had a tetanus shot. Vaxicheck answers that question – and the ones that follow.

  • Tetanus · Diphtheria Up to date
  • Measles · Mumps · Rubella Up to date
  • Influenza Booster due
  • Pneumococcus Not recorded
Example view
  • Vaccination status and gaps

A clear overview of your protection: up to date, booster due, or not recorded – based on current recommendations such as those of the STIKO.

  • Booster reminders

Optional push reminders before a vaccination is due, so you can plan your next appointment in time.

  • PDF export

Create a tidy PDF of all your vaccinations in seconds – for your doctor, a new employer or travel.

  • Sharing with consent

Share your vaccination status with a practice or clinic. Nothing is transferred without your explicit approval.

  • Travel vaccinations

Record travel vaccinations and find them grouped by destination country when planning a trip.

  • In your language

Use the app in 43 languages – vaccines and diseases are shown in terms you understand.

I think this app is simply "great". I'm 73 years old and was able to use it right away. What's excellent is that I just took photos of my vaccination record and the app did the rest: neatly sorted, easy to read and right at hand.
I can only recommend the app to everyone, you just find your way around it and it's more than easy to use.

I'm thrilled. My vaccination record is a real mess, and thanks to the app I now have an overview – at 82, my eyes just don't keep up like they used to.

With 4 photos and entries from almost 30 years, some of which I couldn't read myself, the app created a complete and correct overview within a few minutes.
I checked all the entries afterwards and found no errors.
It was incredibly easy to use!

I'd even give it 6 stars. I've been waiting for this for years! Thank you, thank you, thank you! The AI read all of my quirky entries except one. The only thing I can't place is the old smallpox vaccination.

Reply from Vaxicheck: Thank you! The smallpox vaccination can now also be added manually.

I just installed the app and entered everything.
The camera works great. I still have an old document from the GDR (former East Germany). A lot of vaccinations were recognized and entered automatically. Really fantastic.
I can also manage my kids in it as well.
A big help!

I downloaded the Vaxicheck app onto my Android phone and tried it out. Big compliments, I'm thrilled.

Here are the plus points:
• In a short time I had entered all 37 vaccinations from 1980 to today.
• The photo recognition works excellently.
• Manual entry is self-explanatory and simple.
• The share function via email works well.
• The vaccination overview generated as a PDF is clearly structured. I'm going to give it to my GP for my patient file.
• The vaccination recommendations are helpful.
• The settings under indication and travel are handy.

Comments:
• It would be nice to have - if it doesn't already exist - a vaccination reminder as a notification.
• As far as I can tell, the data is stored locally on the phone and not on any server or cloud. Still, the question of data privacy comes to mind.

Reply from Vaxicheck: Vaccination reminders are now available with an update. Data is processed locally and on servers – without tracking tools and following the principle of data minimisation.

Absolutely brilliant! A tool we've been waiting for for a long time.
Importing via camera/photo works great. For the old vaccinations from 1957, for example, you have to add a few things manually, but that works well too. I can only recommend the app.

Entering the vaccinations via photos of the vaccination record is really very fast. That surprised me, because the entries aren't always easy to read - at least for laypeople. The analysis is based on STIKO and there's an overview of your vaccination status, so you can easily see which vaccinations are recommended/due. A reminder notification would be great.

Reply from Vaxicheck: The current update adds a notification feature for vaccination reminders.

Very practical. Taking photos makes it very easy to use and the vaccination check is very simple. Another practical thing is that this indirectly digitizes your vaccination record. The security settings are also top-notch.

I'm surprised how well it worked with photos!

Great app. Recognizing the vaccinations by photographing the vaccination record works almost flawlessly (you only have to correct things when the handwriting is unclear, and only for the date).
A small request: if you didn't get a vaccination but had the disease (e.g. chickenpox), it would be great to be able to store that as info.

Reply from Vaxicheck: Past illnesses such as chickenpox can be recorded when adding manually via the "Past illnesses" option.

Except for my smallpox vaccination from 1973, everything was transferred cleanly. When editing, you can't add smallpox (missing from the drilldown?)

Reply from Vaxicheck: Thank you! The smallpox vaccination can now also be added manually.

Tried the app right away, had to upload 2 photos twice, otherwise very satisfied - good interpretation and classification - would be great if you could add it to the ePA (electronic patient record) this way? I'll recommend it to family and friends. Congratulations to the developers and AI?

Reply from Vaxicheck: Thank you! We are in contact with various organisations to enable further use cases – one idea also concerns the ePA (German electronic patient record).

Great app.
Importing by photographing the vaccination booklet worked without any problems.
It's clearly laid out.
Comments:
Vaccination check: As a senior, you could surely hide childhood & adolescence
Senior: I received the first dose of herpes zoster, but it isn't shown there:
Settings => Share:
Selected Uni Köln and it's shown too. But I can't see whether data was transferred

Request: reminders as notifications

Reply from Vaxicheck: An update now offers a clearer overview of due vaccinations and configurable push reminders. Once sharing is enabled, the selected institution can access the data – alternatively, a PDF overview can be shared directly.

I just downloaded the app and tested it with a fairly extensive vaccination booklet.
Digitizing the photos worked very well, I only had to fix one thing, because the vaccination had been entered by hand and wasn't read correctly.
BCG is still missing as a selectable vaccination, as is the option for the Tine-Test/MMT and StroVac as a vaccination. The option to enter a titer check would also be good (esp. for women for varicella; my gynecologist always checks the titer first when someone wants to have children and then vaccinates as needed).
In the vaccination check it shows me that my primary immunization for TDP is incomplete. It's not my first vaccination booklet, and the other vaccinations are entered as boosters accordingly. It would be nice if you could specify that as an option (primary immunization/booster), so that the vaccination check doesn't show up red.
For travel vaccinations, I'm missing the note that it's only necessary for trekking trips, low hygiene standards, long-term stays (I tested a few destinations just for fun).

Reply from Vaxicheck: An update now allows adding tuberculosis vaccinations (BCG), and travel vaccinations are roughly grouped by destination. We are currently evaluating the option to record titer checks.

Super app. Entering vaccinations by photo almost always worked. Vaccination check very helpful. Adding manually doesn't work. Listing by disease is confusing with various combination vaccines; it would be nicer to group by (individual) disease. Being able to enter antibody tests would be nice. Photos could be linked to the vaccination entry. The view on smaller smartphones isn't good, the year gets split, so being able to widen the columns would be nice.

Reply from Vaxicheck: An update has improved manual editing and adding; the list can be grouped by disease or sorted by date or search term. Antibody tests are planned, and we have noted the feedback on small screens.

Vaccination recognition via photo works excellently, but when I want to manually enter a flu vaccination (by the way, the search function doesn't recognize the word "Grippe", only "Influenza"), I'm forced to add a disease, but I wasn't sick.

Reply from Vaxicheck: When adding manually, simply select the disease the vaccination protects against and leave the "Past illnesses" option unticked.

I think the app idea is very good and wanted to manage our kids as profiles together with my wife. I saw that you can add a profile via link, but how do I create a profile link so I can then add my child that my wife created on her phone?

That would be super practical for families so everyone has an overview.

Reply from Vaxicheck: An update now lets you open the profile link in the menu under "Backup" and send it by email. This way, profiles can be used on several devices at the same time.
