Who issues vaccination recommendations?
Every country has its own vaccination schedule. It is usually drawn up by a National Immunization Technical Advisory Group (NITAG) – an independent committee of experts that evaluates the scientific evidence and advises the health authorities on which vaccinations are recommended, for whom and when. The World Health Organization (WHO) supports the establishment of these committees worldwide.
Examples are the Standing Committee on Vaccination (STIKO) at the Robert Koch Institute in Germany, the National Immunisation Committee in Austria, the Federal Commission for Vaccination Issues (EKIF) in Switzerland and the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) of the CDC in the USA.
Vaccination schedules differ because diseases, healthcare systems and available vaccines differ from country to country – for example in the timing of childhood vaccinations, booster intervals or vaccinations against regional diseases such as tick-borne encephalitis (TBE).
Vaxicheck compares your vaccinations with the recommendations of the country you select and shows which vaccinations are up to date and which are due. Additional lists, for example for travel vaccinations, can be added. Further countries are being added step by step.
